Amirul Zaidi Nazri, Campus Manager, MY07
As morning breaks, Amirul Zaidi Nazri peers into one of the pools at the MY07 Water Treatment Plant and checks the pressure gauge.
It’s a routine part of his day as Campus Manager with BDC, a role that includes overseeing the complex that repurposes treated effluent from Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) into high-grade water for the campus’s critical cooling systems.
Amirul’s technical expertise in overseeing the advanced filtration systems at MY07’s Water Treatment Plant reflects Malaysia’s growing capability in sustainable data centre innovation.
Flowing in, upstream
Having spent the first 15 years in project and construction operations for high-rise developments, Amirul first ventured into the data centre realm when he undertook a project with a telecommunication company in Malaysia.
He then joined BDC as a project contractor before becoming a full-time Lead Engineer (Mechanical) of Critical Operations at MY06 in Sedenak Tech Park, Johor, in 2023. This gave him the opportunity to deepen his technical capabilities, with exposure to evolving technologies such as immersion cooling, air cooling, and liquid cooling systems. That growing expertise paid off quickly: in less than a year, he was promoted to Building Manager, responsible for the operations and maintenance of one of the campus’s buildings. Beyond scheduled daily assignments involving mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, Amirul and his team were tasked with anticipating risks and resolving potential critical incidents efficiently and effectively.
His enthusiasm and willingness to expand his knowledge didn’t go unnoticed. By May 2025, he had been promoted again, this time to Campus Manager at MY07. In this role, Amirul and his team ensure operational reliability across every building on the 65-acre campus. That means upholding strict Service Level Agreements (SLAs), which set out the operational demands and commitments a data centre must meet, while also maintaining the high standards the industry expects. It also means keeping watch across the campus, including at the Water Treatment Plant, so that mission-critical operations at MY07 are seamless. Customers depend on that reliability, as do the thousands of people across Malaysia who rely every day on the digital services that MY07 powers.
Hosting both local and international delegations at the Water Treatment Plant gives Amirul pride in showcasing Malaysia’s emerging leadership in sustainable resource management technologies.
Expanding Responsibilities
Today, Amirul leads a Critical Operations team of more than 120, supported by managers who oversee the facility’s advanced Water Treatment Plant and overall operations. By recycling and purifying wastewater using technologically advanced filtration systems, the plant supplies all the water needed in the data centre cooling systems around-the-clock. This cutting-edge water treatment infrastructure has zero-reliance on potable water, attesting to BDC’s commitment to ensure community water resources remain intact.
Amirul exemplifies Malaysia’s skilled talent in digital infrastructure and sustainable resource management, positioning the nation as a competitive digital economy.
A Rewarding Career
He admits that while his journey was challenging at times, it is one he readily welcomes.
“My journey with BDC, from construction operations to data centre campus manager, has been professionally rewarding and personally fulfilling. Much of that comes from the support around me, as the team receives regular guidance and mentoring from subject matter experts within the BDC ecosystem,” he says.
“I believe there are many opportunities to grow my career at BDC and scale up my capabilities and competencies as the company invests in expanding its next-generation digital infrastructure across more campuses in Malaysia. I am proud to be part of an industry that is contributing to Malaysia’s ambitions to be a leading data centre hub in the region,” Amirul continues.
He is certain that the company’s continued expansion will keep opening doors for Malaysian talent like him, not just to build careers, but to help strengthen the country’s high-value talent pipeline in this growing industry.
Beyond career growth, playing an integral role in the MY07 Water Treatment Plant has given him insight into how technological advancement and caring for the environment do not have to be mutually exclusive. For Amirul, it demonstrates how innovative infrastructure and responsible resource management can support data centre needs and contribute to a more sustainable future.
Beyond the workday
Outside work, running is one of Amirul’s hobbies. In May, he joined 5,000 other runners at Larian Bersama Bomba, crossing the finish line in under forty minutes with a strong sense of accomplishment. Sipping on his bottle of water at the finish line, he found the moment offered a fitting connection to the responsibilities that have become part of his expanding role.
